How to Submit Your Website to Search Engines

Sunday, January 22, 2012

The most common question every website owner has when thinking about implementing a site is "How do I get my website listed in the top search engines?" There are several top search engines to think about, the most obvious are Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Having your website indexed will let the search engines know you exist and crawl your site. However, it is up to you to increase your page rank and get visitors to visit your site. Keep in mind that just because you submit your site to the major search engines, you are not going to see immediate results. This is because the search engines will rank your site and prioritize results based on backlinks, social engagement, and most importantly the content on your web page. To increase your page rank once you have submitted your site, you will need to focus on the following items:

  • Increase the number of backlinks to your site. You can start by participating on other blog sites and forums and post links back to your site. Of course, you need to be ethical about this and not create spam. Other site owners are not interested in promoting your site.
  • Create a sitemap. Sitemaps are very useful for web crawlers. They tell them where your pages are located.
  • Make sure that each one of your pages has a unique title, relevant keywords and meta description, and of course most importantly excellent content.

Before you embark on this mission, please note that there are several companies online that will submit your site to all of the major search engines for a fee. You can save yourself a lot of work by using this type of service, or just do the work yourself. I prefer to manually submit my sites, at least to the major search engines.

Submit your site to Google

Google is the top search engine, and should be your stop when submitting your site to the search engines. You can submit your site using this link.

Submit your site to Yahoo

You don't want to forget to submit your site to Yahoo. If you visit their submission site, they now instruct you to submit your site using Bing's site submission, so as long as you submit your site to Google and Bing, you have all three major search engines covered. Visit Yahoo's Site Explorer submission site for more information.

Keep in mind that while it is important to submit your sites to the major search engines, it is more important to get those backlinks created, and develop good content. If you focus on these tasks, there really is no need to spend any money on submitting your site through companies that charge for this service. I wouldn't be too tempted even if they claim that they will submit your site to hundreds of directories. The reality is that 99% of Internet users, use either Google, Bing, or Yahoo. Feel free to do a search for "Submit your site to search engines", but I assure you that if you follow the steps outlined in this guide, that's all you will need to do to get your site listed.
